Gardening

How to Survive Quarantine 101: Start a Garden.

MJ proposed the idea a few days ago, and the kids were hooked. We placed an order with a local nursery that offers curbside, contact-less pickup, and tackled the project over the weekend.

First we had to clear out a space among our weed-infested beds. That was the hardest part of the whole project, but with multiple sets of helping hands, it went quickly. We filled 6 bags of weeds!

Little Man came outside and watched for a few minutes, then announced (to no one's surprise), "I'm here to play, not to help. I don't want to get my hands dirty."

Once the bed was clear of weeds, we mixed in some soil and a sprinkle of fertilizer, then decided where the plants would go. One one side is a cherry tomato plant, a grape tomato plant, and some green bean seeds (planted under a cage). On the other side is zucchini plants and a cucumber plant (in a cage).

Ironically, we used two tomato cages -- but neither for our actual tomato plants (which are bush varieties and don't need cages).

Done! With some water and a little luck, we'll have our own veggies later this year. The kids are excited. CC -- who loves tomatoes -- said, "Now when we're outside playing, we can just eat right off the plant!"

And Little Man, who doesn't like any of the vegetables we planted, said, "Once the zucchinis grow, we can make zucchini muffins!"

(And yes, MJ is growing a Quarantine Beard!)
