"It's not really the kind of holiday you celebrate," I answered her. "It's a day when we think about all the soldiers who died, protecting our country."
She wrote, "Fly our flag" in her journal. And yes, that's definitely part of it. It's a patriotic holiday, after all. Sometimes I wish we lived near a military cemetery, so the kids could get a better sense of what Memorial Day is all about. But heck, I didn't even grasp until I was an adult that Memorial Day honors veterans who died fighting.
