Swim Team

The kids are done with swim team for the summer! It was their first year, so none of us could really grasp how different it was from "normal" swim team. There were many fewer swimmers, from what I'm told -- a large percentage of families who normally participate in swim team opted not to this year. Parents couldn't watch the kids swim during practices or meets, but dropped them off in the parking lot. Coaches wore masks and didn't get into the water with the kids. Kids had to follow strict social distancing rules. Meets were virtual -- our kids swam at our pool, while the opposing teams swam at their pools, and the coaches compared times afterwards to see who won.

One benefit to having virtual swim meets is that we could compete against swim teams from anywhere. Our opponents this year were from New Jersey, Florida, Alabama, California, and even Australia!

Still, our three loved it. I was so pleasantly surprised, especially since CC and Little Man haven't always loved the sports they've tried in the past. Just 6 weeks ago, my kids didn't know any strokes. But now they're diving like pros, doing breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle -- even butterfly! I am so darn proud of them!

They all became strong swimmers, and they're excited for next year. Hopefully next summer the world will be back to normal, and we'll get to experience the excitement, camaraderie, and fun of a "real" swim season.
