For the first time in 238 days, our kids went back to school this week. Holy cow! And despite our concerns for the safety of everyone involved, it was glorious.
"It's been a really long time since we've seen our friends' legs," mused Little Man. I laughed when I realized he was referring to all the Zoom instruction they've had since March -- just seeing everyone's upper body on the screen.
During recess, CC called me on her Gizmo. "It's amazing!" she gushed.
"What's your favorite part so far?" I asked.
"Everything!!"
But I know the best part about it was seeing everyone they know and love -- friends, teachers, and staff members. When they spotted Mrs Burke, they were almost beside themselves! Both days, she made sure to meet our car at the front of the school as I dropped off the kids.
For the foreseeable future, they will go every Thursday and Friday (the other half of the students go every Monday and Tuesday). Everyone in the building -- children as well as adults -- wears masks. The kids stay in their classroom for lunch and all their classes, instead of rotating to music, art, the library, the cafeteria, etc. They go outside for PE and recess, but they aren't allowed to use the playground equipment. They can't share anything. Their desks are 6 feet apart. No parents or volunteers are allowed inside the building. But even with all these restrictions, all three kids agreed that it's better than virtual learning at home! (Not sure if I should be offended by that.)
And what did MJ and I do, being kid-free for two whole days? SO MUCH. But we both took this afternoon off to go out to lunch, watch a movie, and relax together. Bliss.
