Our little swimmer is more than halfway through her first year-round swim season, and things are going fairly well. Due to Covid, we aren't allowed to watch her practices, and most of her swim meets this year haven't allowed spectators, either. But we are able to watch her meets on a live stream, and all the results are published online. She's really making some big strides!
Her favorite event continues to be 50 meter breaststroke. Her time has gone from 66.4 seconds to 56.32 seconds! Her coach even gave her a shout-out at the last practice for cutting so much time.
At all four meets so far, she has competed in the 50 meter freestyle. Her time has gone from 57.08 seconds to 43.46 seconds. Even more impressive improvement!
Additionally, her coach signed her up to compete in 50 meter butterfly once, and some longer distances like 100 meters in backstroke and breaststroke. She continues to feel a lot of anxiety leading up to meets when these events are on her slate, but we're working on confidence building and relaxation.
But most importantly, she's continuing to stick with it, and she (mostly) still loves it. She's had a few moments where she has cried that it's too hard, because she says she's "the slowest person in the group" and can't keep up with the others. Yes, she may be on the slow side, but this is largely due to her size -- the other girls are considerably larger than she is!
I'm really hoping that she's learning some valuable lessons about grit, fortitude, and the benefits of hard work. Even if she's not winning medals at these meets, we're still proud of her dedication and improvement. Swimming is such a great sport!
