There is just one person in our lives who didn't know the good news about our upcoming addition.
As I've mentioned before, MJ has a handicapped uncle who lives in a facility about 2 hours from here. MJ is his legal guardian, and we visit him whenever we can. Brien is a pleasure to be around; he is a very happy guy, and he just adores MJ. (I am incidental. For the first few months we knew him, he just called me "MJ's Wife.")
We hadn't told Brien about Otto for several reasons. First, although he understands what "pregnant" means, I didn't have much of a belly until very recently, so we thought he'd be a bit confused. Also, he has a very bad understanding of time: "next year," "tomorrow," and "in two weeks" all pretty much mean the same thing to him. So we decided to wait until we were much closer to the birth to tell him the news.
So last weekend we drove up to visit Brien, bringing Rory with us. Brien loves Rory and was thrilled as soon as he saw her jump out of the car. The weather was so beautiful, we decided to go to a local park for a picnic lunch.
During lunch I asked him if he noticed how big my tummy was. He smiled and admitted that he thought I was getting fat. Ha ha -- it's a good thing I'm not self-conscious about my appearance! When we told him we would be having a baby, he said he thought the baby would be a boy, and we should name him Brien.
I can't wait until Otto is born and we can introduce him or her to Brien. We have seen him around babies in the past, and he just loves them. He will be so excited to meet his newest great-nephew or great-niece!
