Twins Update

Thursday I had two appointments: my monthly appt with my obstetrician, and the anatomy ultrasound of the twins.  I am happy and relieved to report that both went well.  Here are the details:

My obstetrics appt was quick, because the doctor knew I was about to get a very detailed ultrasound from the maternal-fetal medicine folks.  But he did tell me two bits of good news: a) I have no reason to believe I'll need any form of bedrest during this pregnancy, and b) I should be fine to take a trip with MJ and CC in June for MJ's grandmother's 90th birthday party.  Of course he couldn't guarantee either of these things 100%, but he said all the signs are good and he's not worried.

My MFM appointment was great.  We had a nice long ultrasound during which they checked every inch of both babies.  They both have all their fingers and toes, their brains and hearts looked good, and neither has cleft palate.  The technician checked all the organs and bones, and everything was normal.  The babies both had strong heartbeats, and both measured 19.5 weeks (right on target).

MJ and I saw a lot of ultrasound footage of both babies, and received a lot of printed pictures afterwards.  Here's a cool picture of both babies:

Even more interesting, this ultrasound machine could give 3D imagery.  We never had that opportunity when I was pregnant with CC, so it was new and exciting for us.  We actually got to see the babies' faces!  Here's Baby A (looking a little like a monkey).  I'm sure he will be cuter in real life!

And at first, Baby B insisted on hiding from us:

But finally he moved his arm and we were able to see this sweet face:

(We just say "he" for convenience -- we really don't know the genders.)

I was especially thrilled to learn that I no longer have placenta previa.  It's a condition where the placenta (in my case, Baby A's placenta) is not located in the right position.  It can cause pre-term labor, complications later in pregnancy, and force a c-section.  Fortunately mine was not a bad case, and my obstetrician had told me that Baby A's placenta would most likely move into proper position by week 28 or so.  Imagine my surprise and happiness when I learned on Thursday that it has already moved!

The last bit of good news is that they were able to do a measurement that tells them I am at extremely low risk of going into pre-term labor.  It's amazing to me that they can give me those kinds of odds this early in the pregnancy, but the MFM doctor was very surprised and pleased to see that my odds were so low.

So ... Thursday couldn't have gone much better!  Special thanks to my mother-in-law, Sally, for keeping a loving eye on CC while MJ and I were at the appointments.  CC would not have appreciated sitting still and quiet during that long ultrasound!
