Appliances always die when it's least convenient, of course. And sure enough, my washing machine decided to shuffle off its mortal coil right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend, when we had three houseguests.
We limped along, borrowing a friend's washing machine for one quick load of essentials on Tuesday, until the repair man arrived on Wednesday. Instead of repairing the machine, as I was praying he'd be able to do on the spot, he informed me that it wasn't worth fixing, and I would be better off getting a new machine altogether.
Sigh. It's not exactly the kind of news I was hoping for. But fortunately things went about as smoothly as they could have. My dear neighbor was able to babysit CC for me while I ran all over town on Thursday, comparison shopping and deciding on a model (thanks, Alice!). And my mom helped me with research on various types and models, and stayed glued to her computer while I ran from appliance store to appliance store, ready to look up prices and check reviews for me.
In the end, I purchased a Whirlpool Duet. It's a front loader, which I've never had before, but I'm getting to know it quickly. I bought it from a local appliance store that was able to a) match the sale price that Best Buy was offering, and b) deliver it the very next day. Three cheers for local companies! The washer been working overtime since the minute it was installed on Friday, catching up on all the laundry that had built up over a week.
We will probably buy the matching dryer at some point, but for now my existing dryer is still working fine and I'm having a hard time justifying getting rid of it.
P.S. Front loaders are great for babies! CC is fascinated, watching all the laundry tumble around through the window. And although the buttons are just the right height for her to reach, conveniently they must be held down for three seconds in order to make a change. Hmm ... with such a simple but effective childproof feature, could it be that Whirlpool engineers were thinking of moms when they designed it?!

At least the washer died with three adult house guests, and not three babies who need clean clothes :o) Good thing it got taken care of now, I think!
A word to the wise about front loaders... (moved into a house with one a couple months ago)... Keep the door and soap compartment OPEN between loads to dry out. If I'm going more than 24 hours between loads, then I close it. I would leave the lid open on my old top load and never thought much about it. Now with the front load, it seems more convenient to leave it closed, but that will only create a nasty stink! Also, when taking things out of the washer, I grab a clean sock, towel, etc. and wipe down the bottom of the rubber gasket on the door where water can collect and I try to soak some water out of the soap compartment.
Good luck!
Funny-the caption says "New Washer" and it appears CC is taking over the duties in the photo. I think at this age you have to limit kids under 3 to only 1 load a day or child labor laws kick in.
