Today we bundled up the littlest ones and headed to the pediatrician for their first appointment. It was mostly just a weight check to make sure they're getting enough to eat and gaining what they should.
Fortunately, all is well. Both babies are on track to regain their birth weights within the ideal 10- to 14-day window.
Our little baby girl was 7 pounds, 4 ounces when she was born, and dropped to 6 pounds, 10 ounces while we were in the hospital. Today she weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces, so she's gained 4 ounces since being released from the hospital 2 days ago. That's great -- 2 ounces a day is double what doctors look for!
Our little baby boy was 6 pounds, 6 ounces when he was born, and dropped to 5 pounds, 14 ounces while we were in the hospital. Today he weighed 5 pounds, 15.5 ounces. One and a half ounces may not sound like a lot, but the nurse assured us that his weight gain is within normal ranges.
Both twins objected to their examination, but that's no surprise -- CC was the same way. Our boy screamed so loud that the nurse couldn't hear his heartbeat with her stethoscope!
We will go back next Monday for another weight check, and if everything looks good, the doctors will not need to see the babies again until they're a month old. I'm hoping that in the meantime, the twins will start eating bigger meals. Right now they only eat 5-10 minutes at a time, which means they're hungry again just an hour or so later. But in the next 5 days their stomachs should increase in size, allowing them to eat more at a time. And that should make a big difference in our nighttime sleep!
