This week the big one-year-olds had their doctor's appointment, and fortunately everything went well.
I talked to the doctor about how Little Man and Sweet Pea are at much different developmental places than CC was when she turned 1. At age 1, not only was CC walking on her own, but she could understand much of what I said. For example, I could say, "Help Mommy put these toys away," and she would help. I could say, "Go get that book," and she would.
The twins just aren't there yet. They understand their own names, but I can't tell that they understand much more than that. And not only are Sweet Pea and Little Man not walking yet, but they're not even standing or "cruising" along furniture, either.
To my surprise, the doctor told me that of the 4 major developmental areas pediatricians focus on, two are generally the same for twins as they are for single babies: fine motor skills and social awareness. But two are almost always lagging behind: gross motor skills and verbal ability. These are the exact areas where I've noticed the biggest differences between the twins and CC.
But the doctor isn't worried. She said that it's typical of twins, and they will generally catch up to the curve by age 2. So it won't be long before Little Man and Sweet Pea are giving CC a run for their money!
Sweet Pea wins the award for making the biggest fuss at the appointment, and I'm not even talking about when they received their vaccinations. She didn't even want to be examined, and did her trademark tantrum-face-plant into the table instead. The doctor had to have me hold Sweet Pea's hands down!
The numbers:
Little Man weighs 21 pounds, 5 ounces (48th percentile). He is 29.5 inches tall (25th percentile), and his head circumference is 46 centimeters (46th percentile).
Sweet Pea weighs 16 pounds, 9 ounces (8th percentile), almost 5 pounds less than Little Man. She is 27.5 inches tall (5th percentile), and her head circumference is 46.5 centimeters (86th percentile -- gracious!).
