Renovation Week 5

Not much visibly changed this week, but a lot was done regardless. The electrician finished all the wiring, and the plumbers finished all the plumbing. And thankfully, the city inspectors arrived promptly to conduct inspections, which we passed smoothly and quickly.

The new shower, plumbed and framed:

The new double vanity, plumbed:

(That big pile of debris behind the studs is trash to be removed shortly. That space will be a little storage nook for us, accessible through MJ's new room to the left.)

I was relieved to learn that this renovation would not require losing plumbing and electricity to the house for days at a time. Our architect had warned us about that -- as a reason for why we should move out during construction (um ...where?) -- but the plumber and electrician were both surprised when I asked them about it. We never lost electricity to the house, and the plumber only had to turn off the water for about 15 minutes while he connected the new bathroom pipes to the rest of the house.

Working with the electrician was nice, because he had good ideas about our new rooms (like putting outlets in all the closets -- genius). And I had to think about details like where the light switches in each room would be, which made everything seem even more real.

The HVAC system was also inspected and approved this week, so we're done with inspections until the windows are in. That's good news, because there's always a risk of delays when you're waiting for the inspectors to show up.
