Budding Entrepreneur

CC's class is in the midst of a unit on Economics. They're learning about supply and demand, currency, and how people trade money for goods and services. As part of a project, each student was asked to come up with a product or a service to sell to their classmates. After changing her mind several times (hair braiding, melted crayon molds) CC finally decided on key chains made of perler beads.

In the weeks leading up to the sale, the kids worked on their pricing and names and mottos for their shops. CC's shop was: "CC's Key Chains: You're Going to Love Them."

Friday was the big day. She and the other kids brought in their wares, set up their signs and price lists, and counted their Bee Bucks (earned all year for good behavior). When I picked her up at the end of the day, she breathlessly informed me that it had been "the best school day ever!!" She'd sold out of key chains in minutes, several friends buying more than one. And she'd used her own Bee Bucks to buy a host of treasures, like slime (three different colors), a matching bracelet and necklace, a baggie full of craft supplies, melted crayon molds (good thing she didn't choose that one), a Polaroid picture of herself, and other miscellania.

This unit ends with a field trip later this week to a shopping plaza, where the students will get a tour of a grocery store and a pet supply shop, then eat at a taco place. What a cool unit!
