Cancer Run

Recently our elementary school held a charity run to raise money for and bring awareness to cancer. It was also the first school event that involved the entire student body -- from both campuses. The kindergarten through 2nd graders were bused to the 3rd through 5th grade campus so that everyone could participate.

After the time and effort in the last two years that has gone into the merger of our schools, I got a little emotional seeing all the students together for the first time. One thousand kids strong! It was also an emotional event in general -- all the students had been asked to submit the names of people they know who have or had cancer, and those names were read out over the loudspeakers before the run started. It was sobering hearing hundreds of names, not only of our loved ones and friends, but the names of friends and teachers (including CC's teacher, a breast cancer survivor).

The Morrison trio ran in honor of Grandpa, Great-Pepere, and Maddie (a friend's daughter battling brain cancer for the 4th time).

Once the run started, our kids performed predictably. Little Man pitched a fit and refused to participate at all. CC walked almost the whole time. And Sweet Pea gave it her all, sprinting around the track the whole time.

This picture sums up one of the many reasons I love our school. Look at this diversity! CC is surrounded by her best friends, and it looks like the United Nations.
