Little Gymnast

Check out this little one ...

Within just a few months of starting gymnastics at our new gym, Sweet Pea has been promoted to the pre-competition girls' team. The coach praised her attention to detail, her ability to focus, and her willingness to take critique. None of this was a surprise to me or MJ -- Sweet Pea has always been a very earnest child who wants to excel at everything she does. We're so proud of her!

It will be at least two years before she can start competing in meets, and who knows if she will still want to pursue gymnastics at that point. But for now, Sweet Pea is having fun.

We switched to our new gym this year for two reasons: first, because our old gym's classes for kids were basically just open playtime, without much actual gymnastics instruction. And second, this new gym has a very good program for boys. So far I have been pleased on both counts.

With this promotion, Sweet Pea practices twice a week, totaling four hours. It seemed like an awful lot for a 6-year-old, but she doesn't mind a bit. "I just love my new class, Mommy," she sighed yesterday. Fortunately it has been a smooth transition, because MJ can pick her up on his way home from work. Bonus: he arrives a few minutes early and gets to see her strut her stuff.
