Sweet Pea was part of her school's Battle of the Books team this year, and it was a great experience! To be honest, she's never been much of a reader -- she is usually so busy, and when she reads, it's just the same graphic novels over and over (mostly the Phoebe and her Unicorn series). But one of her closest friends, Charlie, wanted to be on the team, and I think that's the main reason Sweet Pea signed up.
They were required to read as many of the 15 books on the list as possible, and since the books were all excellent and award-winning, Sweet Pea ended up loving many of them. Some of her favorites were The Elephant in the Room by Holly Goldberg Sloan, The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-el, and Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston.
The team traveled to another school to compete against a lot of other elementary school teams, and came in second. My friend Tina (Charlie's mom) coached the team, and I volunteered the day of the competition so I could see them in action.
Since then, Sweet Pea has requested other books by some of those same authors from the library! I hope this was the beginning of a life-long love of reading.
