28w5d Update

This morning I had my latest OB appointment, and it went very well.  Unfortunately, I didn't get an ultrasound like I have in the past (another doctor was using the machine at the time).  I told my OB that he'd spoiled me by giving me ultrasounds every appointment so far, and he laughed and said I was getting a taste of what most women get during their OB visits: a doppler check of the baby's heartbeat, and a fundal measurement.

Otto's heartrate was nice and steady as usual, and my measurements were fine.  My glucose test results from last visit came back at very good levels, so thankfully I do not have gestational diabetes.  Unfortunately I did test borderline anemic.  Anemia (iron deficiency) is extremely common in pregnancy, and my doctor said that even though I am borderline anemic, that's actually better than average.  He wasn't too worried; he just told me that I should continue taking my pre-natal vitamins for the extra iron content.

Because my blood type is negative and MJ's is positive, I received my rhogam shot (in the butt -- ugh!).  Just in case Otto's blood is positive like MJ's, this shot will keep my body from producing antibodies against his blood during labor and delivery.  If I didn't get the rhogam shot, and if Otto's blood was positive, and if my body produced antibodies against positive blood, it could have disastrous consequences for any future pregnancy.  Fortunately, I'm covered now.

There are a few small complaints I brought to his attention: frequent numbness/tingling in my right arm, stomach pain, and trouble sleeping.  None of these worried him, because they're all extremely common in late pregnancy.  The numbness in my arm is a kind of carpal tunnel syndrome, and can sometimes be helped by wearing a wrist brace.  The stomach pain is indigestion, and can be helped with Tums.  And you can't really do anything about the sleeplessness except take Benedryl or Tylenol PM.

All in all, Otto and I are both fortunate enough to be in great health!
