We had a small, but fun, New Year's celebration. The big event was that we made our own piñata (a Morrison first). We built a giant, 3-D "2020" out of cardboard, covered it in paper mache, then painted it and stuffed it with goodies. Unfortunately, due to rain we had to hang it in the garage, but we invited a few of our friends to help us bid farewell to the strangest, saddest year I can remember.
I explained to the kids that normally, all the new year's celebrations would be about the coming year, not the previous year. But I decided that our piñata should say "2020" instead of "2021" because we all wanted to smash the heck out of 2020! Plus, wouldn't it be nice for something good to (quite literally) come out of 2020 for a change?

Afterwards, we ate meat pie, watched football, caught the New Zealand fireworks (the kids were not impressed -- tough crowd!) and went to bed nice and early with dreams of a better 2021.
Technically, 2020 wasn't all bad. Our family did fine, enjoying all the family time, and making the most of the projects and crafts we occupied ourselves with in the house. We took two nice vacations, got a new kitchen, and stayed healthy. Amber probably thinks 2020 was the best year ever! But we missed our friends, missed going to school, missed our community and church and all the crowded events that we look forward to every year. Most of all, we missed our grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins -- the holiday celebrations, the visits, the hugs. I know I'm not alone hoping that 2021 is the year we watch Covid-19 disappear in the rearview mirror.
