This past weekend was Sweet Pea's second gymnastics meet. Unlike last time, this meet was in-person, which made me nervous, so we decided that MJ would stay home with CC and Little Man. But fortunately Covid precautions were being enforced, and I felt pretty safe once Sweet Pea and I arrived.
I reminded Sweet Pea in the car that not every meet would be as successful as her first one. I mean, she placed in every event last time -- there's no way she could maintain that! And this meet would be even larger. So I told her to focus on trying her best and having fun.
During the meet, I was pleased to see that Sweet Pea's scores in each event were better than they were last time. I was impressed at her improvement. Only her vault --the last event of the meet -- earned her a lower score.
There was no awards ceremony, because of social distancing restrictions, but our coach showed us how to check the website for the standings.
I couldn't believe my eyes, and I had to have her coaches confirm it for me. Sweet Pea came in FIRST for bars, FIRST for beam, FIRST for floor, and FIRST overall! I was stunned. Sweet Pea just calmly stood there when we told her the results. Her coach said, "This is how she was during the entire meet: cool as a cucumber. I couldn't even tell if she understood that the meet had started!"
After we got in the car to head home, Sweet Pea called Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa, and Memere and Pepere with the big news. And then maybe hearing all the shouts and congratulations helped it sink in -- she began smiling, and even said, "I'm so proud of myself! Every single medal I got was a gold!"
"What happened with vault?" I teased her.
"I was tired, Mommy!" she laughed.

I'm a little sad that there wasn't an awards ceremony. It would have been amazing for her to hear her name called out so many times, and to take the top place on the podium.
